'Rambler' combines unique travel experiences with gaming

Rambler is taking travel experiences and gaming to a new level. This site wants to inspire you to do challenging and fun things where ever you travel. The idea is that of a scavenger hunt: you have to find or do things, based on your location and you earn points for each experience that you complete. The more points you earn, the higher you end up on the leaderboard. So 'pet a lion in Zimbabwe', or 'light a paper lantern in Chiang Mai'.
These seems like fun things and fit in with the country or destination that you are visiting. Not all challenges seem to be worthy of spending your time on though, but I guess that's just up to the individual traveler to decide on. The 'social' element is very much there as well, as completed challenges can be shared and new challenges can be added by everyone that joins the site. This is a nice way of sharing your memorable experiences with others.
As the site is still quiet new, some destinations still need challenges to be added. The only challenge in The Netherlands so far is having to 'find a gremlin in the basement of a pub in Amsterdam'. This hardly seems to be worth the effort and there are thousands of other things to do, that will give you a better experience of my home country. Belgium still lacks any experiences. Must be that all those people that enjoyed drinking those nice beers they have, have forgotten completely about it by the next day.

Destination marketing via Pinterest: analysis by Anne Hornyak

Great new post by Anne Hornyak on the use of Pinterest by destination marketing organisations (DMO's). I have blogged a few time on this subject, but Anne has gone through the trouble of investigating how many DMO's are actively using Pinterest as a destination marketing tool. Thanks Anne, I am sure this will be of great interest to the DMO's in The Netherlands!

Succesvolle influencer marketing in 6 stappen - via Frankwatching

VisitEngland introduces 'Holidays at Home are GREAT campaign'

Today VisitEngland introduces it's 2012 campaign to encourage Brits to holiday 'at home'. It's the biggest ever domestic campaign. The campaign is a joint effort by VisitEngland and the national tourist boards of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London. One of the key parts of the campaign are the special deals that are being offered by tourism partners with a special '20.12%' discount.

A staycation means no hassle with the Euro
Even though the campaign only starts today it has already been slammed by ABTA (Association of Britisch Travel Agents). The are saying that the campaign is a misguided use of public money. Read the full article via this link.

The promotional video will be aired today for the first time in the UK. It more or less claims overseas travels are a hassle and that staying 'at home' is less or no hassle. And of course some great British humor as Stephen Fry mentions that you don't have to put up with the Euro. Very funny!

Why travellers are combining destinations with their passion

The travel destination (and what is has to offer) no longer is the single driving force behind the choice where to travel. Travel experts are saying that travel is evolving from something that people 'want' to something that they really 'need'. And that is why more and more people are matching the destination of their choice with their interests and passion. This can be anything from cooking, to culture, yoga, wine-making or adventure.
This fact offers great opportunities to destination marketeers (DMO's and CVB's) to target these interest groups through social media communities.
